EM Director

Letter From the Director...

Welcome to the website for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center - Nashville's emergency medicine residency program in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.  Our ACGME accredited, 3 year program accepts eight residents per year.

Highlights of our program in emergency medicine include:

Clinical Focus – our clinical rotations and didactics heavily emphasize developing the clinical skills needed to become an outstanding clinician. Our clinical rotations are geared towards high-value emergency medicine and ICU experiences. Our pediatrics experience is integrated throughout each ED shift. Our weekly conference focuses on developing outstanding clinical decision-making skills and a broad knowledge base.

Community-Based / Sponsored by U.T. – our residency offers the unique advantages of being based at a high volume, efficient community hospital, while also offering the academic resources of the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine. Our emergency medicine rotations take place at Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford, one of the busiest emergency departments in the state. As the only hospital in Murfreesboro, a city of over 130,000 people, our emergency department sees the entire spectrum of pathology seen in our community. Our new $300 million hospital opened in 2010. Our 49 bed emergency department is one of the busiest in the state, and sees over 90,000 patients a year. Without many other residents competing for patients, our residents can play a very hands-on role in managing their patients and have the opportunity to perform a large number of resuscitations and procedures.

As part of a thriving, private group, the emergency medicine faculty can help teach you the “real world” of emergency medicine. Our group is very connected with the two hospitals we staff, and members of our group have served as the Chief of Staff at both, as well as nearly every other major leadership position in the hospital.

Location - Middle Tennessee is a great place to live with a wonderful climate and tons to do in in the dynamic cities of Nashville and Murfreesboro. There are a wide range of very affordable housing options. We love living here and you will too!

Commitment to Resident Wellness and Successful Careers – Our residency’s focus is on meeting the educational needs of our residents, rather than the service needs of our hospitals. Attending physicians will typically supervise only one or two residents at a time. Resident wellness is a high priority to us. Social, networking, and team-building activities will help us to create a true community for our residents. We will provide mentoring, coaching, and support to help our residents’ be successful in regards to the areas they are passionate about. Our residency will help empower our residents to be successful on the career path that best suits each of them.

Leadership Development – Our residency faculty have achieved tremendous success as leaders locally and nationally. Our residency director is the immediate past President of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine. Many of our faculty members are heavily involved in national and state emergency medicine organizations, as well as high-level local leadership roles. As an emergency medicine resident in our program, we will offer education and mentoring to help you become an effective leader and to maximize your success throughout your career.

Our emergency medicine residency provides an outstanding training environment. Thank you for your interest in our emergency medicine residency program.

Sincerely,

Mark Reiter, MD, MBA, FAAEM
