*In addition to the base salary, those residents participating in the individual disability and group life insurance programs provided through GME currently receive an additional $660 per year for disability and life insurance benefits as shown above in Column 3. Residents not participating do not receive this stipend.

Stipend

The educational stipend for categorical residents is $5,000. A variety of educational materials are covered, per the Reimbursement Guidelines for UTGME Support Dollars.

Vacation

Paid annual leave of three (3) weeks per twelve month period.
Sick leave of three (3) weeks per twelve month period for absences due to personal or family (spouse, child, or parent) illness or injury.


Insurance Coverage

Health insurance is required and administrated by CIGNA Healthcare. Residents pay 20% of the premium for the health coverage selected.

On Call Meals

General Surgery Residents will have access to meals at no charge through the physicians’ dining room. During hours when the physicians’ dining room is closed, residents can use a meal card at the hospital cafeteria, Table 137. The meal card will be provided at orientation with an allotted amount preloaded on the card.


White Coats

Each incoming resident will be provided with three personalized white coats and one coat each year thereafter as necessary.


Loupes

Each incoming resident will be provided with a pair of Surgical Loupes through The William H. Edwards Endowment for Education in Vascular Surgery.


Computers

Each incoming resident will be assigned a laptop for use during the course of their training.  Additionally, residents will have access to computers in all clinical areas, as well as the medical library.


Library Resources

Residents have access to the medical libraries of both the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and Ascension Saint Thomas.  The combined resources include over 6,000 electronic journal subscriptions and 1,200 electronic books.  There is a full time, Master’s-trained Medical Librarian on-site and available to residents at the program’s primary site, Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital West, as well as Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown. The librarians are available to assist residents in navigating the resources of both Ascension Saint Thomas and UTHSC, perform literature searches, support scholarly activity, and provide many other services that benefit residents during the course of their training.
