Research

General Surgery Residents will complete at least one scholarly activity project during residency. Residents will be encouraged to develop their own scholarly activity projects, as well as to take an active role in scholarly activity being led by Surgery Faculty.

Scholarly activity may include participating in a research study, preparing a medical publication (i.e. textbook chapter), participating in a substantial quality improvement initiative, or other scholarly activity of comparable scope. Residents will be educated on research methodology, statistical analysis, and critical analysis of the medical literature, and will have abundant support services through the University of Tennessee and Ascension Saint Thomas to help with research design and analysis, and data collection.
