Simulation

Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown is a pioneer and leader in the area of obstetric simulation. The OB simulation faculty continuously updates didactic and hands-on programs for nursing staff and attending obstetricians. All attending obstetricians are required to participate in OB simulation yearly to maintain hospital privileges. The OB simulation faculty travels to outlying hospitals to train physicians and nursing staff and conducts a twice-annual national continuing education program for physicians. Topics include postpartum hemorrhage, operative vaginal delivery, severe preeclampsia and eclampsia, shoulder dystocia, breech delivery and interdisciplinary critical event team training.

Our residents produce educational simulation videos for presentation to major conferences. Our most recent video on eclampsia is available on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8Z3YTB_LP0

Minimally Invasive Surgery Simulation

The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology requires every resident to obtain certification in MIS (minimally invasive surgery). The program maintains state-of-the-art laparoscopic simulators and instruments to assist residents in honing their MIS skills and satisfying this requirement.
