Residents are allowed 3 weeks paid vacation per year.
- Life - no cost. Covered by the University of Tennessee.
- Disability - no cost. Covered by the University of Tennessee.
- Malpractice - no cost. Covered under the provisions of Tennessee's Claims Commission Act.
- Health/Dental - through Cigna Healthcare. Cost is shared by the University of Tennessee.
Both maternity and paternity leave are available and can be arranged to accommodate one's individual schedule.

Residents have access to the medical libraries of both the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and Ascension Saint Thomas. The combined resources include over 6,000 electronic journal subscriptions and 1,200 electronic books. There is a full time, Master’s-trained Medical Librarian on-site and available to residents at the program’s primary site, Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown. The librarian is available to assist residents in navigating the resources of both Ascension Saint Thomas and UTHSC, perform literature searches, support scholarly activity, and provide many other services that benefit residents during the course of their training.
