*In addition to the base salary, those residents participating in the individual disability and group life insurance programs provided through GME currently receive an additional $660 per year for disability and life insurance benefits as shown above in Column 3. Residents not participating do not receive this stipend.

Stipend

A variety of educational materials are covered, per the Reimbursement Guidelines for UTHSC GME Support Dollars.  The educational stipend for categorical residents is as follows:

PGY 1 - $1,000
PGY 2 - $1,000
PGY 3 - $1,000
PGY 4 - $1,000

Vacation

Residents are allowed 3 weeks paid vacation per year.


Insurance

  • Life - no cost. Covered by the University of Tennessee.
  • Disability - no cost. Covered by the University of Tennessee.
  • Malpractice - no cost. Covered under the provisions of Tennessee's Claims Commission Act.
  • Health/Dental - through Cigna Healthcare. Cost is shared by the University of Tennessee.

Maternity/Paternity Leave

Both maternity and paternity leave are available and can be arranged to accommodate one's individual schedule.

Library Resources

Residents have access to the medical libraries of both the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and Saint Thomas Health.  The combined resources include over 6,000 electronic journal subscriptions and 1,200 electronic books.  There is a full time, Master’s-trained Medical Librarian on-site and available to residents at the program’s primary site, Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital.  The librarian is available to assist residents in navigating the resources of both Saint Thomas Health and UTHSC, perform literature searches, support scholarly activity, and provide many other services that benefit residents during the course of their training.
