Educational Program
The UTHSC-Nashville Emergency Medicine Residency Program provides a rich educational program for our residents that covers the core content of emergency medicine on an 18 month cycle (twice throughout residency).
Emergency Medicine Resident Conferences are held weekly on Thursday mornings from 8AM to 1 PM. Conference time is protected.
In addition to lectures, we utilize a variety of interactive learning strategies such as skills workshops, simulation exercises, mock oral boards, interactive podcasts, M&M conference, Clinical Question conference, and our monthly Journal Club.
We feel it is important to provide a solid framework for our residents’ non-clinical education as well, and topics such as preparing for your emergency medicine career, personal finance, and the non-clinical aspects of emergency medicine are incorporated into our curriculum and mentoring.
Rotations
Our residency heavily emphasizes clinical time spent in the emergency department and on critical care rotations.
First Year
The first month of the EM-1 year is Emergency Medicine Orientation. All EM-1 residents participate in orientation activities followed by clinical time in the ED. During this month, EM-1s work a light clinical schedule so they may have ample time to become acclimated. This month includes a variety of activities and social events to help our new residents become acclimated to Middle Tennessee and the hospital and to become acquainted with their new resident colleagues. Residents will also participate in an ATLS course.
