The University of Tennessee Heath Science Center-Nashville and Ascension Saint Thomas are dedicated to providing high quality educational experiences, while simultaneously fostering a culture of wellness in our residency training programs.
Our campus-wide approach to resident wellness is led by the UTHSC-Nashville/Ascension Saint Thomas Wellness Committee, which is comprised of faculty and residents from each training program. Through their sponsorship of activities and programs related to various aspects of wellbeing, provision of resources aimed at supporting wellbeing, and availability to residents across the Nashville campus, the committee works to ensure wellness is promoted within all UTHSC-Nashville residency programs.
Specific goals of the wellness committee include:
- Promote a healthy work life balance.
- Provide physical, psychological, social, and professional wellness education.
- Maintain a peer support and advocacy network for the residents.
The Family Medicine Program puts emphasis on being not only great doctors, but great people. The faculty believe in our residents’ quality of life and show this in many ways. There are dedicated lectures built into the curriculum early and often that are designed to give residents perspective, comfort, and a safe place to work through the stresses of being new doctors. In addition to formal lectures, there is also optional time set aside monthly to meet outside of the clinic with faculty and family and talk about life, medicine, and whatever else comes up. Residents have already started a tradition of spending time together after Wednesday afternoon block lectures, and they genuinely enjoy being around each other. This is a place to come to train to be a doctor, but also to learn how to be healthy and happy for residency and throughout your career.
