*In addition to the base salary, those residents participating in the individual disability and group life insurance programs provided through GME currently receive an additional $660 per year for disability and life insurance benefits as shown above in Column 3. Educational Support Funds
The educational support funds for categorical general surgery residents is $5,000. A variety of educational materials are covered, per the Reimbursement Guidelines for UTGME Support Dollars.

Insurance
Health, dental, and vision insurance are provided for residents and eligible dependents. Life and Disability Insurance plans are also offered. More information on the UTHSC GME insurance policies can be found here.
Leave
Residents are generally provided paid annual leave of three (3) weeks per twelve month period and sick leave of three (3) weeks per twelve month period for absences due to personal or family (spouse, child, or parent) illness or injury. Residents are also offered six (6) weeks of Supplemental Leave over the course of their training for use for parental (maternity/paternity), personal medical, and/or caregiver situations. Additionally, residents are offered Educational Leave and Bereavement Leave. More information on the UTHSC GME leave policies can be found here.
Meals
Residents have access to meals at no cost through the physicians’ dining room. During hours when the physicians’ dining room is closed, residents can access meals at no cost through the hospital cafeteria.
Computers
Each incoming resident will be assigned an Ascension laptop for use during the course of their training. Additionally, residents will have access to shared computers in all clinical areas.
White Coats
Each incoming resident will be provided with three personalized white coats and one coat each year thereafter.
Loupes
Each incoming resident will be provided with a pair of Surgical Loupes through The William H. Edwards Endowment for Education in Vascular Surgery.
Library Resources
Residents have access to the medical libraries of both the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and Ascension Saint Thomas. The combined resources include over 14,000 electronic journal subscriptions and 7,000 electronic books. There is a full time, Master’s-trained Medical Librarian available to residents. The librarian is available to assist residents in navigating the resources of both Ascension Saint Thomas and UTHSC, perform literature searches, support scholarly activity, and provide many other services that benefit residents during their training.
